Weekly Takes - Monday, September 29th Edition
I would have no issue with Easton Cowan making the Leafs, even if it means on the fourth line.
A “fourth line” of Steven Lorentz - Scott Laughton - Cowan would not be a traditional fourth line, while there would be obvious PP2 time for Cowan as well.
The Leafs are trying to win a Cup. If Craig Berube thinks he’s one of their top 12 forwards, he has to be on the team.
One of the strengths last year and this year for the Leafs is they have a great goaltending duo making hardly anything, relative to the rest of the league.
And after Brad Treliving’s incredible deal with Anthony Stolarz
The Alexander Barkov injury is crushing for the Panthers.
An aging core, with lots of miles on them, just lost one of the best players on the planet.
Even if they go out and trade for Sidney Crosby, they are still a worse team today than they were a week ago.
I cannot fathom why the Blue Jays DFA’d Alek Manoah.
What would have been the issue with bringing him to Spring Training? If his “stuff” still looked cooked come the spring, sure, go ahead and DFA him, but moving off him now just so you can keep… Easton Lucas on the 40-man does not make any sense to me.
What made the Blue Jays “slump proof” – and why I was hardly concerned during their slide early last week – is because they are nine-deep, do not strikeout, and play elite defence.
Ross Atkins and John Schneider get a lot of credit for that.
Tough to go on a skid when you do all the little things right. Every team will go through struggles, but the Jays played near-perfect baseball since June for a reason.
My 2025 MLB Playoffs predictions…
Wild Card…
Yankees over Red Sox in 3
Tigers over Guardians in 2
Dodgers over Reds in 3
Padres over Cubs in 3
Divisional Round…
Yankees over Jays in 5
Mariners over Tigers in 4
Brewers over Padres in 4
Dodgers over Phillies in 5
Championship Series…
Mariners over Yankees in 6
Dodgers over Brewers in 6
World Series…
Dodgers over Mariners in 7
The Steelers are 3-1, first place in their division, Aaron Rodgers is looking better and better, their defence is finally back to sacking quarterbacks, and their run game is improving weekly.
But they badly need another wide receiver and for Mike Tomlin to stop living in his fears if they want to compete in the AFC.
The Eagles may be undefeated, but it is as unimpressive of a 4-0 start as you can have. They look a lot like the Chiefs last year.
The NFC is more open than people think.
It says a lot about how bad of a coach Zac Taylor is when the Bengals look as bad as they have in these last two weeks.
No Joe Burrow — I get it — but they have the best wide receiver in the league, an outstanding number two, and an above average running back.
Just shockingly bad.
