Weekly Takes - Monday, June 19th Edition
The Nuggets championship is the ultimate win for parity.
They hired the right people, drafted extremely well, developed their own prospects, and added depth around their core.
Some teams buy their way to championships. They did the total opposite.
Beautiful.
2. The Golden Knights path to developing a championship roster was not too shabby either.
In sports, there are so many teams afraid to be great, with the fear that they will be “Monday Morning Quarterbacked” if their moves do not work out.
That was not the mindset for Vegas, who made one big move after another, whether it be through trade or free agency.
You cannot be afraid to be great. Vegas was not.
3. There have been many individual positives for the Blue Jays, but none come close to the one positive they have as a team, and that is, despite drastically underperforming, they are only one game out of a playoff spot.
They have no reason to feel bad for themselves. They are in a great spot to make the playoffs as they completely control their own fate as they head into the second half of the season.
We are going to find out what this core is made of.
4. If the Raptors hired Jama Mahalela to be their next head coach, it would have been a great hire.
Hiring him to join Darko Rajakovic’s staff is a home run of a hire.
There was no bigger loss to the Raptors since their championship win (off the court) than Mahalela, who played a massive part in the development of the Pascal Siakam’s and Fred VanVleet’s of the world.
5. There is only one ball to go around, so it is to be determined if the Suns can make a Big Three of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal work, but given how light of a package they had to pay for Beal, it was a no-brainer of a trade.
If this era of Suns basketball flames out, it will not be the fault of management.
6. For the second season in a row, it seems as though people are going to wrongly sleep on the Argos.
Their pass rush is elite, their secondary is not too far behind now that Jamal Peters is back in the fold, and they may very well have an elite quarterback in Chad Kelly.
They are the class of the East.
