Weekly Takes - Monday, April 27th Edition

  1. I do not seem to have an issue with the supposed two finalists for the Maple Leafs general manager opening.

I know John Chayka has taken a lot of flack for how he conducted himself while in Arizona, but he is a progressive-thinking, aggressive mind who was young and dealing with a meddling owner.

As for Scott White, he is the right-hand man in Dallas to arguably the best general manager in the league in Jim Nill.

The reality is, their offseason moves will determine whether Keith Pelley nailed the hire or not.

  1. A week ago, I wrote how the Leafs need to get better at PR. Hiring Mats Sundin, a franchise icon who knows the market better than anyone, would sure go a long way.

  1. The easiest way to avoid goal line controversy in hockey is by puck tracking. MLB does it better than anyone with ABS. The NFL is getting with the times too. It is time for the NHL to do so as well.

  1. There is great irony is the Senators “Hype Over Heart” motto, when their captain and face of the franchise is as loud, hyped, and overrated as any player in the sport.

It is time for Ottawa to move on. Hand the keys to Tim Stutzle, even though his playoff performance was every bit as bad.

  1. Here is what I have learned about the Raptors through their first four playoff games…

  • Scottie Barnes is closer to being a #1 option on a championship team than he is a #2

  • Colin Murray-Boyles is going to be the third-best player from the 2025 draft. What a parting gift from Masai Ujiri

  • Darko Rajakovic is not perfect, but he is maximising what a team this small, with limited shooting ability can do. He is absolutely the coach of the future for this team

  • Toronto desperately needs to replace one of Brandon Ingram or Immanuel Quickley with more consistent three-point shooting in the offseason. Go get Barnes one more shooter.

  1. It was a bad look for the Steelers when they got one-upped by their inter-state rival on night one of the draft, but Omar Khan made up for it when he traded up to draft Germie Bernard on night two.

Pittsburgh’s defensive line depth is questionable, but they are truly a quarterback away from competing in the AFC.

  1. Being a quarterback away is why I am fine with taking a swing on Drew Allar.

As is the case with Will Howard, he is more likely than not to flame out, but he is big, has a cannon of an arm, and is not exactly awful when it comes to decision making and processing the game.

This is where Mike McCarthy can work his magic.

  1. I am fine with the Rams taking a swing on Ty Simpson.

I totally get the logic of wanting to go all-in and surround Matthew Stafford with as much help as possible, but it is easy for all of us to say that from our couches. There is soon going to be life after Stafford. The Rams are preparing for it with someone that they believe is going to be their guy.
